Joseph Bellapianta, MD is working in collaboration with the Andrews-Paulos Research and Education Institute biomechanics laboratory to analyse the forces in the knee during a golf swing and what measures can be taken to help prevent knee injuries. Currently our recommendations for patients with knee injuries wanting to get back into golf involve starting slowly with putting and short irons first. Also, wearing sneakers instead of spiked shoes initially can help to decrease some of the rotational forces seen by the knee.

In this groundbreaking study, low handicap golfers have undergone an extensive swing analysis using EMG sensors and 12 infared cameras, force plate analysis, cartilage mapping MRIs, and biodex strength testing (to determine the forces each leg muscle can produce). Different clubs and foot positions were recorded and data analysis is currently underway to determine if we can more accurately make suggestions for post-surgical patients and patients with knee injuries.
